Hokkaido

image2It has four distinct seasons with a subarctic climate. November to April, about 6 months, is considered as Winter. It gets coldest and amount of snow fall increases particularly between December and February. However, from early summer to autumn, the temperature is more moderate. It is rare for temperatures to rise above 30 degrees C, and the comparative low humidity helps, even in higher temperatures. There is no rainy season. Amount of rain is not great, so thus there are not humid days like on the main land of Honshu. Every year typhoons cause severe damage on the main island, but by the time they reach Hokkaido, they become extra-tropical cyclones and hardly cause any damage in Hokkaido.

image3Hokkaido is known for the quantity, and quality of snow. It snows almost every day in the mountains during Winter. On average, annual snow fall is over 6m in Sapporo. The quality of the snow is considered to be the best in Japan, and one of the best kinds in the world for winter sports. Once skiers and snow boarders experience this snow, it can become addictive. This great snow also, provides safe and good tasting drinking water. When Spring comes, signs of life sprout from under the snow, and it is time to see the beautiful cherry blossoms which are a symbol of Japan.

Many different kind of flowers blossom all at once between early summer and mid-summer. There is also a great choice of food for each season in Hokkaido. In Autumn, the trees in towns and mountains begin to display an array of colors. Around Mt. Taisetsu and the Niseko area, there is an amazing view of colorful trees. As soon as the leaves fall, it starts snowing. Ice drifts come to the Okhotsk coast line from Siberia, which brings seals and sea eagles. So, Hokkaido has distinct seasons for all to enjoy.

We hope to see you soon!
